Texas Holdem, contrary to popular belief, is not a game of 100% luck. Wining consistently at Texas Holdem requires mastery of a few different skills. First and foremost, a winning Texas Holdem player knows exactly
what hands to play and in what circumstances they are most profitable. A seasoned Texas Holdem player also knows how to read the other players at his table. The ability to read other players allows such a Texas Holdem player to slow play certain hands effectively, enabling him to “trap” other overly-aggressive players sitting at his table.

Trapping an aggressive Texas Holdem player can be a very lucrative strategy if setup and executed properly. Unfortunately, even some of the most seasoned Texas Holdem players do not know how to set these traps effectively. This usually results in reduced winnings or, worse yet, losing hands altogether that shouldn't be lost. Losing hands that should be won is a recipe for disaster so care must be taken when setting the trap in Texas Holdem.

What does “setting the trap” mean? Basically, trapping another player involves feigning weakness while holding a dominant hand and then hoping he bets heavily with what he feels is a strong hand. For example, I love limping into a mutli-way pot with something like pocket twos. I may even call a small bet if need be just to see the flop. If a third two comes down on the flop along with a high card such as an Ace or King, I am in a very powerful position because I have made a set that is very well hidden and my opponent has probably connected with a very high top pair with a strong kicker. He now thinks he's got the best hand when in actuality, he is a distant second best. When play comes to me in this case, especially if I am in early position, I will normally check in the hopes that whoever follows me bets heavily with a strong hand.

In these hard times, gambling and lottery revenues are up, with people putting their faith and a tiny bit of toward these get-rich-quick schemes. While WalletPop in no way endorses gambling or playing the lottery, we were curious to find out what are the odds when putting some money toward making fast.

Anthony Curtis, the president of LasVegasAdvisor.com, the go-to site on the latest happenings and deals in Sin City, used to make a living as a card-counting genius, like the one dramatized in the movie 21. Curtis came to Las Vegas in 1979. He states that the competition this day is immense, and he doesn't advocate being a professional poker player as a career path. “Where my serious money got made was in publishing,” he says, citing the Las Vegas and gambling-interest books he regularly puts out.

So what odds does Curtis give for some of the world's favorite get-rich-quick pastimes?

The lottery
“There's a longer shot than being shot by lightning,” states Curtis on your odds of winning the lottery. So saying a chance? “If it was that easy, there would be a whole lot of millionaires walking around,” he says. The odds of winning Mega Millions, according to MSN, are 1 in 135,145,920. MSN also points out that buying two tickets keeps your odds the same.

Blackjack
In this card game, the player tries to get to 21 without the sum of his or her cards exceeding that number. “Blackjack is the game considered to be the for the player,” says Curtis. “It has a varying degree of house advantage….Counting cards monitors the deck.” Card counting lets a player know when he or she has the advantage, to inform the size of the bet. It is not illegal, states Curtis, but the casino has every right to not serve you if you're caught doing it. For the average person not counting cards, the odds in blackjack are as low as .5 to 1.5% in favor of the casino. This means, for every dollar you bet, you lose .5-1.5 cents, which adds up the more you play.

Slot machines
It may be enticing to sit in one place and just pull a lever for hours, watching the colorful slots spin. Curtis warns, “The unwritten rule is, the easier something is to do, the more it will cost you to do it.” He places the odds of winning at slots, 1.5-15% in favor of the house. That means, you could lose up to 15 cents per dollar, which really adds up, especially with a passive game like slots where it's simple to get sucked in and play for hours.

NCAA basketball

March Madness is high betting season, creating pools among co-workers everywhere. As a tiny school called Butler taught us this year, don't just go for powerhouse universities like Duke. (Even though Duke won, betting on underdog Butler at certain rounds would have meant favored odds). Curtis explains one way to in NCAA, “You can make a futures bet. You look at those 64 teams and say, I think Butler is going to triumph [the tournament].” This would have given 60 to 1 odds, states Curtis, explaining, “If that last miracle shot had gone in at the end of the game, would have made $600 on a $10 bet.” The odds of turning a tiny into a lot with futures betting at NCAA basketball is 20-30%, depending on how huge an underdog you pick.

The Super Bowl
“There are more ways to bet on the Super Bowl than any other sporting event,” says Curtis. You can bet on anything from who you think will get to specifics like how many yards, completions, or points players will have in the game and even compare those numbers to other sporting events. These are called proposition bets and Curtis says the options are limitless but the odds are hardly in your favor.

Keno
It's everywhere in Las Vegas and to play — from 1 to 20 numbers on your Keno card and hope they are drawn. Entry bets are $1, and the fact that Keno is commonly found in restaurants and bars in gambling towns, makes it an easy game to fall into. The odds are 30% in favor of the house, Curtis.

Politics
While it's illegal to bet on politics in the United States, except for on Web sites where anything goes, especially on the notorious Irish-based PaddyPower.com. The site favored President Obama in the 2008 election and even took bets on his chances for passing health care reform.

Short version: Nintendo’s new DSi XL is aimed squarely at the older generation of casual gamers. People that appreciate something that’s a little easier to read. The people who wear their reading glasses while they sit down for their morning glass of fiber and read their copy of the AARP Journal. And heaven help me, I like it.

Features:

  • A larger screen
  • Full size stylus
  • Comes pre-loaded with Brain Age Express: Math and Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters
  • MSRP: $189.99 (regular DSi is $169.99)

Pros:

  • Large screen is to read
  • Games still look great
  • Case size easier to hold

Cons:

  • Large size reduces portability
  • Nowhere to put stylus
  • Uncomfortable for people with small hands

I like Nintendo’s portable gaming consoles. I had a Game Boy, Game Boy Color, DS phat, and a DS Lite, but I never saw the point in the DSi. So when Nintendo sent me a DSi XL to review, I was pleasantly surprised by the functionality. Would I a DSi XL to replace my DS Lite? Probably not – but I do like the DSi XL, and would suggest it to someone looking to get into portable gaming.

Build quality is as you would expect it to be. Nintendo knows these things are going to be knocked around, and build them so they can take it. The unit I was sent is the bronze color, with the majority of the device having a matte finish. The top of the cover, however, is glossy and picks up finger prints. Not fingerprints like you’d see on a PSP but they are present.

I’m not going to reinvent the wheel here as far as reviewing the DSi functionality. Yeah, it’s a DSi, only bigger. It’s designed for the older crowd that play those little $10 blackjack games from Radio Shack, and if they market it properly it’ll be huge. I have hands. I like the DSi XL because I like the larger form factor, and the screens. My wife isn’t as much of a fan. She’s got smaller hands and found that the DSi XL made her left hand to cramp after playing Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for about 30 minutes. I saw another review mention issues with screen clarity. I definitely didn’t notice this issue. I love playing RTS games like Civilization Revolution, and if the screen was fuzzy I’d definitely notice it. The screen was crisp and clear, and it didn’t feel like the games were designed for a smaller display at all, which was one of the things I was concerned about when I first read about the DSi XL.

Should you buy a DSi XL? Sure, if you don’t already have a DSi. I’d just advocate that you check one out at your local game shoppe first to be sure that the size won’t be an issue. Is it a reasonable upgrade from the DS or DS Lite? Absolutely. Should you buy one for your mom for Mother’s Day? Only if you are a large geek and you’re sure she’ll like it.

Casino operator Wynn Resorts stated Thursday it is dropping its bid to rescue a troubled waterfront casino project in Philadelphia, saying the project isn’t appropriate for the company, The Associated Press reported.

The Las Vegas-based company it has terminated agreements and negotiations for a possible investment in the long-stalled Foxwoods Philadelphia project, which has faced financial difficulties and neighborhood opposition since winning one of two say casino licenses set aside for the city in 2006.

”We are fascinated by the legalization of full gaming in Pennsylvania and stimulated by the opportunity that it presents for Wynn Resorts,” Wynn’s chief, Stephen A. Wynn, said in a brief statement. ”This particular project did not, in the end, present an opportunity that was appropriate for our company.”

The announcement surprised Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, who had met Monday with an eager Mr. Wynn to discuss the project that supporters had hoped would boost the economy and redevelop the waterfront. ”This is a stunning turn of events,” Mr. Nutter told The Associated Press. ”I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

And it seems that investors were equally surprised. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported:

Steve Cozen, an attorney for the local investors who brought Wynn into the project, the investors learned of his decision from a news release and received no explanation or other information.

“We are shocked and amazed,” Mr. Cozen said. “We’re trying to find out what is behind it and what if anything can be done about it.”

In February, Mr. Wynn signed a letter of intent with investors in Foxwoods to develop the waterfront site with Philadelphia Entertainment and Development Partners, a group made of local investors and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. The tribe controls two casinos under the Foxwoods name in Connecticut.
